What's the upside to the downturn? A chance for bicycles to roll back into the public consciousness...
This isn't your usual donation to the Annual Fund. The economic crisis, as painful as it is for so many of us, can be an open gate for bicycling. We can show that bicycling facilities offer loads of recreational opportunities for all ages, but can be built and maintained with much smaller budgets than can gyms, pools, and football fields. Building trails keeps green space, rather than turning forest acres into heat islands. We can be cheap and green.
But spreading this news to local and federal officials takes some bucks. If you can't help financially, we'd love to see you on the trails, of course, but if you can, please help us grasp this opportunity to make long term, fundamental changes in how bicycles are incorporated in planning for recreation.
We will use your Annual Fund contribution to support our advocacy work in 2009. Your support in the past has made all the difference directly or indirectly to adding trail in your area. We can make even bigger strides as the bicycle gains greater recognition as both a legitimate transportation and recreational vehicle. Land managers and government agencies are looking to bicycling as a part of the solution to many of society's current problems, including childhood obesity, diabetes, and even traffic congestion and air pollution. SORBA and IMBA are poised to make lots of progress in this increasingly bike-friendly climate, but we do need your help.
