SORBA/IMBA Fund Drive
Dear SORBA/IMBA member,
What's the upside to the downturn? A chance for bicycles to roll back into the public consciousness...
This isn't your usual donation to the Annual Fund. The economic crisis, as painful as it is for so many of us, can be an open gate for bicycling. We can show that bicycling facilities offer loads of recreational opportunities for all ages, but can be built and maintained with much smaller budgets than can gyms, pools, and football fields. Building trails keeps green space, rather than turning forest acres into heat islands. We can be cheap and green.
But spreading this news to local and federal officials takes some bucks. If you can't help financially, we'd love to see you on the trails, of course, but if you can, please help us grasp this opportunity to make long term, fundamental changes in how bicycles are incorporated in planning for recreation.
We will use your Annual Fund contribution to support our advocacy work in 2009. Your support in the past has made all the difference directly or indirectly to adding trail in your area. We can make even bigger strides as the bicycle gains greater recognition as both a legitimate transportation and recreational vehicle. Land managers and government agencies are looking to bicycling as a part of the solution to many of society's current problems, including childhood obesity, diabetes, and even traffic congestion and air pollution. SORBA and IMBA are poised to make lots of progress in this increasingly bike-friendly climate, but we do need your help. You can donate online http://www.imba.com/annualfund/, or send your check directly to SORBA at 2125 Elachee Dr., Gainesville, GA, 30504.
Please remember SORBA and IMBA at this time of year when you are writing checks to your favorite charities. Thank you for your generous support.
Sincerely,
Tom Sauret Executive Director
SORBA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and donations are tax deductible.

Competitive Cyclist Reviews EFS Liquid Shot
This is one six-pack you want to knock back when behind the bars. If you’re riding all day. Literally. First Endurance is building on the success of their drinks and bar with this “gel,” the EFS Liquid Shot. We put quotes around gel because there are no gelling agents in the liquid. Since you probably don’t ride all day that often, you can take a flask in place of two bars. Or in place of a bar and toss it in the fridge when you get home.
You might think the world needs another energy liquid like it needs another hole in the ozone layer. You’d be wrong. It gets down to this; the EFS Liquid Shot is jammed with carbohydrates, amino acids, and electrolytes. And goes down easy thanks to the absence of gelling agents, which can make “gels” sticky and dry. Without these agents, the liquid is more viscous and can be ingested without the aid of water.
The first thing is they measure a serving as five ounces of liquid, which fills the flask the shot comes in. In that, you’ll find 400 calories. Of the 400, there are 100g of carbohydrate in a mix of glucose, maltodextrin, and sucrose. The reason for the mix is to have fast-acting, slow-acting, and easy-absorbing carbs. The bottle also has 1000mg of amino acids, broken down into glutamine and branch-chain amino acids isoleucine, leucine, and valine. There is also a pretty heavy-duty electrolyte blend of 400mg sodium, 290mg potassium, 150mg calcium, 120mg magnesium, and 600mg chloride. As all cyclists should know, we sweat out salt and have a great need for electrolytes when exercising hard, and the loss of salt can lead to cramping. First Endurance argues that you need more than just salt to prevent cramping; that’s why the rest of the electrolytes are present. The Liquid Shot will keep your electrolytes balanced, help with absorption, reduce lactic acid build-up and keep the body going.
If you’re the type who can’t reach back for your pockets or, in the cold, have poor pocket access, you can empty the flask, or two, into a water bottle and top off with water. 400 calories in a standard-sized bottle is thicker than any drink we know. 400 calories is also about the size of two bars. Doing two in a bottle would make for a liquid meal.
The flasks can sit sealed and unrefrigerated for a year, but once opened, should be consumed within 24 hours. If a bottle is unfinished after a ride, pop it in the fridge and keep it there until the next ride. When you empty the bottle, save it for reuse with the First Endurance EFS Liquid Shot 32-Ounce Bulk Container (with 30 ounces of Liquid Shot). The flavor is Vanilla.

OYM represents at the WPB Time Trial Series
Our time trial team is representing us well. We thank them for their hard work and good sportsmanship! Charlie Lockerson took 5th in his age group, a monumental improvement over his previous TT's. Charlie recently got his bike dialed by Matt Goforth (our resident laser bike fit professional) and BOOM he's on the podium!
When seconds count our bike fit will get you minutes! Congrats Charlie, we know you work hard too!
Lynn Symthe, aka The Bike Diva, also did well. She took 4th place in her division.
These three are also slated to ride the Intracoastal Waterway Century with Team in Training in November. If you will, use the link to navigate to their pages and help them out to raise funds for this great cause. You know these folks are tough when they are training for a century and TT's at the same time! Almost as tough and courageous as the people battling Leukemia.
Congrats to you all! Keep up the hard work.

Sizing a bike vs. Fitting a bike
Sizing a bike is rather mundane, and often overlooked as an important step in the bike fitting process. The directions below will give you exactly what you need to find the proper frame size. Taken directly from Wobble-Naught , the worlds best fitting solution and our chosen method to professionally fit bicycles.
The only tools needed to size your bike are 1) level or book, 2) a metric tape, and 3) a calculator!
This is a very simple sizing process!!! It takes very little time.
- Take your inseam length while standing in your socks with your feet about 4 to 6 inches apart, back against a wall.
- Hold your level or book under your crotch (pull up firmly).
- Use the tape from the top of the level or book, and measure to the floor.
- Read the tape in centimeters.
- Multiply the (cm) measurement by .67
- Mountain Bikes, subtract 11 cm and round to the lower number, road bikes round to the nearest even cm.
- This should roughly be the length of the seat tube on a properly sized frame.
This should give you a good reference point on size, so that you can obtain a precision fit.

Train with Purpose: Dean Yobbi's Perspective
Dean Yobbi and I have crossed paths (no pun) on a few different occasions. Exclusively during mountain bike races such as the Goneriding 6hrs of Oleta, and the 6hrs of Santos. Dean does a lot of talking with his bike, with many podium finishes and consistent efforts over the years. He's always been one of those racers I've liked to watch compete because you know he'll be there at the end. Dean started training with a power meter a couple years ago and explained to me "I had my best year when I started training with purpose". Dean is a student of the game, like me, and now he's passing on his knowledge as a USA Cycling Coach.
I feel lucky to have finally met Dean on a more personal level, and respect him for the work he is doing to give back to the sport of cycling. I also value his opinion and insights. Dean has started a blog, and its shaping up to easily fit into my list of daily reads. Check Dean out at dyotraining.blogspot.com and drop him a line, mention OYM sent you.

Share the Road... we make a good case!
Walkers, bikers say 'share the road'
Tuesday, May 20, 2008
PALM BEACH GARDENS — About 40 walkers, runners and bicyclists made a five-mile loop Wednesday night through PGA National to bring attention to non-engine-powered travelers killed using public roadways. Ride of Silence walks also were held in about 20 other Florida communities, including a 10-mile event in in Boca Raton starting at Patch Reef Park. Ride of Silence events also were scheduled in Europe, Australia and South America to mark the annual event. As gas prices increase, more people are trading their vehicles and riding bicycles and walking. Motorists need to be more aware that they must share the road, said Matt Goforth, organizer and owner of a local bicycle shop.

To Commute, or Not?
On average, a car with a 19 mpg rating, emits more than one pound
of carbon per mile. By riding a bike to work one day a week instead of driving, in one year the average commuter can reduce their carbon emissions by 10,000 lbs! Pick one day a week to bike, walk or take public transit to work. Bicycle riding isn’t only about benefiting our planet, it improves your quality of life!
Together we can all make a difference. On Your Mark respects companies that strive for building well rounded commuting bikes, who implement and/or support materials recycling programs, commuting alternative projects, and practice reduction and reuse policies as in house standards.
Here are 5 quick carbon-reducing tips:
1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - As Americans, we each generate about 5 lbs of trash a day! Reduce your output by bringing your re-usable coffee mugs and shopping bags to the store. Getting rid of plastic bags by bringing your own re-usable canvas bags could save the US 100 billion plastic bags annually, sparing an estimated 12 million barrels of oil.
Not only does it take less energy to manufacture a recycled product than a new one, it takes even less energy to buy previously owned goods.
2. Shop locally - The shorter the distance food travels to your plate, or goods travel to your home, the fewer greenhouse gases are produced. Decide that one day a week is "local day" and eat foods produced within 50 miles of your house and patronize your local retailers.
3. Cut down on your water usage - Water related energy can consume as much as 19% of your state's electricity, using up to 30% of its natural gas, or 88 billion gallons of diesel fuel every year. Turn off water when not in use, take shorter showers, stop unseen leakes by reading your meter, and install low-flow shower heads and aerators on your faucets.
4. Save electricity and money - Replacing one incandescent light bulb with a CFL can save $30 or more in electricity costs over the bulb's lifespan. Unplug electrical appliances such as televisions and stereos when they are not in use. Eliminating this electricity "leak" could save you 6-26% on your average montly electricity bill.
5. Increase energy efficiency at home - By keeping your air filters clean you can save up to 350lbs of CO2 or $150 per year. Take advantage of the free home energy audits offered by many utility companies. Purchase Energy Star rated appliances. Make sure that your home is well insulated. Poorly sealed doors, windows and attics are energy drains. Efficiency is the name of the game!
Make Energy Conservation A Priority
There's ideology and then there's reality. Make energy conservation a reality by adjusting your daily habits. Riding to work every day may not be feasible, but even one day a week can reduce your carbon footprint by up to 20%. If we all take the initiative, we can ensure that future generations will not only enjoy the beautiful outdoors as we have, but live long and healty lives!

Grand Opening!!!
Today and tomorrow, we are having a Grand Opening. I'm not sure what it all really means, but we're doing it. Our support group, and partners have all expressed the importance of having one...or two openings. Who knows, maybe we'll do this again next month. We'll just have to see how it goes.
Our location cant be much better being located just off the turnpike in Palm Beach Gardens. We have one of the largest golf course communities adjacent to us, and the residents have been very supportive of the concept. You'll just have to stop in and check us out.

Kona 12hrs of Santos
Notables on the day:
Harvey Minton (Indy Fab) took the top prize in the 12hr solo category. I called Harvey to give him my congrats personally. Harvey and I go back awhile, he's been a great help to me along the way and is a tremendous resource. This guy had his plan down pat and it shows with his result. Way to go Harvey! I look forward to following the rest of your season.
Greg Derosa (UBC/MBI Homes/Melitta), an On Your Mark client, took the top prize in the 6hr category by simply out-running the competition. Nobody could keep up with him. I got the opportunity to ride with Greg on his last lap. Before you call me out... I admit I was on a team for this one. Regardless, I was fresh and Greg was rolling out... they dont call him "the Diesel" for nothing!
Other OYM clients did very well...
Dave Snow took 16th, having just been fit by me a little over 1 month ago. Dave had this to say:
"The bike fittings have been the best investment I've made on the bikes and have a lot to do with my improvements."Right on!
Karlos "The Naked Indian" Ar Bernart-Rodriguez also had a good day finishing 8 laps, good enough for 32 out of 49. Great job Karlos.
Big thanks goes out to Brian "Chewey" Balik for getting us up to speed with Kona, we are Florida's newest Kona Dealer!

A big day in North Miami at the 12hrs of Oleta
Despite the conditions, Julie stuck to her game plan and executed a near flawless race. She kept almost a full lap lead over two other competitors for most of the day. Julie kept going for the full 12hrs and knocked out 9 laps which was good enough for the win, but also a 6th overall finish! An incredible performance! I say near flawless because on her last lap she got in some trouble and tried to bail only to take a chainring to her ankle. Its a pretty deep wound, but we got her to the ER (after her podium glory of course!) and they got it cleaned up. Couple nurses and doctors said yes to stitches, but in the end no stitches were given. The wound is already looking better, and thanks to all of those concerned!
We were there to support Julie, and whoever else needed assistance. Another notable, is the youngster Chris Janiszewski (www.buildingchampioncyclistsfl.net/University of Florida) who cleverly came up thru the ranks during the late hours of the race. Oleta is always a tough course and it really takes a toll. Chris was on his SS pushing 38x20 on a mostly flat course. I tried to give him a few time checks so he could manage his efforts and make an attempt to capture the race. He finished 2nd behind a very determined Kevin Hoffman. Way to go Chris! A great start to the new year!

NY Times: Portland Acts to Protect Cyclists
"This spring, at those same intersections and at 12 others across the city, “bike boxes” will be laid out on the roadway to provide a clearly designated place for cyclists, in front of and in full view of drivers, to wait for traffic lights to change. The boxes will be marked with signs and wide stripes alerting drivers to stop behind them at red lights.
Portland, which has a higher percentage of people who bike to work than any other large American city, is already considered one of the country’s most bike-friendly urban centers. But the boxes, believed to be the first such to be put to use by any city in the country, will make cyclists even safer and more comfortable on the street, biking advocates and transportation officials say."
